How ChatGPT finds content on the web
Key Mechanism
ChatGPT does not index the web from scratch like a traditional search engine. It uses two main mechanisms to access updated content. Understanding both is the starting point for any industrial AEO strategy.
Mechanism 1: Training data. The model was trained with a massive fraction of the web up to a certain cutoff date. Public pages, blogs, technical documentation, articles — everything indexed until the training cutoff. If your site was online and indexed by Google before that cutoff, there is a chance it was seen during this process.
Mechanism 2: Real-time web crawl. When ChatGPT needs recent or specific information, it triggers Browse mode (via Bing) to consult the web in real-time. This means your page can be cited even without being in the training data — it just needs to be well-indexed in Bing and adequately answer the user's question.
What ChatGPT "sees" on an industrial page

Step 3 of the process: write each page with a direct answer in the first 2-4 lines. If the question is "how to size a TTA panel for the pharmaceutical industry," the first paragraph must answer that self-sufficiently. A reader who reads only the first paragraph should come away with a useful answer.
Step 7: test and iterate. At least once a month, ask target questions directly in ChatGPT, Perplexity (which shows sources), and Gemini. Record which pages are cited, which are not, and adjust the structure of those that don't appear.
Applied Example — Medium Voltage Circuit Breaker Manufacturer
Consider a Brazilian manufacturer of medium voltage circuit breakers for industrial panels. Portfolio: vacuum, SF6, and air circuit breakers for the 15 kV to 38 kV range. Target client: panel builders, electrical integrators, maintenance teams.
Initial situation: institutional site with a standard product page, zero structured technical content, no mention in generative AIs. When asking ChatGPT "Brazilian supplier of 17.5 kV vacuum circuit breaker," the model responds with names of multinationals (ABB, Siemens, Schneider) and small national manufacturers that have technical content on their site.
90-day plan: creation of 20 technical pages answering specific market questions — "How to choose between vacuum and SF6 circuit breakers for industrial substations," "Lifespan of 17.5 kV vacuum circuit breaker in continuous operation," "Type testing according to IEC 62271-100: what the industrial buyer needs to demand." Each page with direct answer in the first paragraph, FAQ schema, specific technical data, reference to applicable standards, coherent internal linking.
After 6 months, ChatGPT starts citing the brand in response to the original question. Organic traffic goes from 400 to 2,100 visits/month. Qualified leads via form go from 3 to 11 per month.
