Impressions Rise, Clicks Fall: The Effect of AI Summaries

When Search Console shows your page appearing more often in search but receiving fewer clicks, the most common reason is not a lost position: it is Google answering the question inside an AI-generated summary, counting that appearance as an impression even when nobody clicks. According to the Pew Research Center, which followed 900 adults in the United States in March 2025, clicks on regular results happened in 8% of visits to pages with an AI summary, against 15% without one — the page is still there, just seen, not visited.

Why does Search Console show more impressions and fewer clicks?

Direct Answer

An impression is counted the moment your page is used as material for the answer, even when the visitor never sees a link to click.

Search Console counts an impression whenever your page could have been seen in a result, including as a source behind an AI summary. It counts a click only when someone actually opens the page. When a summary answers the question using your content but keeps the visitor inside the summary, the impression is recorded and the click is not — and the gap between the two numbers grows exactly the way an AI summary is designed to behave.

Being cited is not the same as being visited

According to the Pew Research Center, an AI summary appeared in about 18% of the searches followed in its March 2025 study. Inside that 18%, clicking a link cited within the summary itself happened in only 1% of visits, and the session ended right there, with no further search or click, in 26% of visits with a summary against 16% without one.

Put together, the numbers describe a search that is satisfied earlier in the process. The summary does the reading the visitor used to do on your page, and the citation that would once have been a visit becomes an impression with almost no click attached to it.

The report does not split which impression came from a summary

Search Console does not label an impression as coming from an AI summary versus a classic listing, so no company can read that split directly off the standard report. What is observable is the pattern over time: a page whose impressions keep climbing while its clicks stay flat or fall is a page increasingly answered inside a summary rather than visited.

For a step-by-step way to estimate that presence without relying on a label the report does not give, see how to measure presence in AI Overviews.

This is a different diagnosis from a technical ranking drop

A page can show this exact pattern, more impressions and fewer clicks, while its average position holds perfectly steady. That is the distinguishing sign: nothing about the page got worse, the environment around the result changed. Confusing the two diagnoses leads to fixing a page that was never broken.

What to Adjust

Structure the answer, not only the page
Write the direct answer near the top, in plain sentences a summary can quote without rewriting.
Track citation, not only position
Ask an AI assistant the exact question your page answers and check whether your company is named as the source.

FAQ

Why does Search Console show more impressions and fewer clicks? +
Because an impression is counted whenever your page could have been seen, including behind an AI summary, while a click needs an actual visit. According to the Pew Research Center, clicks on regular results happened in 8% of visits to pages with an AI summary, against 15% without one.
Does this mean my ranking dropped? +
Not necessarily. This pattern can appear with a perfectly stable average position, because the cause sits in what happens after the result is shown, not in where it is placed. Check position separately before assuming a ranking problem.
How often does an AI summary actually appear? +
According to the Pew Research Center, an AI summary appeared in about 18% of the searches followed in its March 2025 study of 900 adults in the United States. The share varies by topic and query type, and the study does not break it down by industry.
Does Search Console tell me which impressions came from an AI summary? +
No, the standard report does not label the source of an impression that way. What is observable is the pattern over time: rising impressions with flat or falling clicks on a query is the visible symptom, even without a direct label.
Is clicking a link cited inside the summary common? +
It is rare. According to the Pew Research Center, only 1% of visits to a page with an AI summary resulted in a click on a link cited inside that summary. Being cited is closer to visibility than to traffic.
Do sessions end faster when there is an AI summary? +
Yes. According to the Pew Research Center, 26% of visits to a page with an AI summary ended the session right there, without a further search or click, against 16% on pages without a summary.
Can this pattern coexist with a real ranking drop? +
Yes, and when it does, both diagnoses need separate fixes. Checking average position on its own tells you which one, or whether both, are in play before deciding what to change.
What should I do first about this pattern? +
Structure the direct answer near the top of the page in plain sentences a summary can quote, and separately check whether an AI assistant names your company when asked the same question. Those two checks together show whether you are being cited even without the click.
